Betances Mural by JJPoatree    Betances Mural detail 5 by JJPoatree

I drove by this mural while looking for a parking space in the South End of Boston on Tuesday July 12th. My intention was to take photos of some of the old and lovely brownstones there, but I was blown away by this wondrous work of art. I knew that I had to explore it with my camera! I soon found a space on Tremont Street and even had enough quarters to feed the meter. I found the story of Betances mural online, so if you're curious, read on! View my gallery for more photos of this wondrous work of collaborative art as well as other photos of the South End of Boston.

In 1988, Betances mural was created by local artists Lili Ann Killen Rosenberg, Nora Valdez, and Roberto Chao, who were assisted by Villa Victoria residents, children as well as adults, who made the ceramic tile pieces. It is the centerpiece of Plaza Betances, in Villa Victoria,100 W. Dedham St. in the South End of Boston.

The Villa Victoria housing community was founded in the early 1970s, when a group of South End residents, most of Puerto Rican descent, lobbied to maintain their community in the South End despite widespread gentrification and redevelopment of the area. After its completion in the mid-‘70s, Villa Victoria was hailed as an unusually successful housing complex, thanks to its desirable living spaces and close-knit, active community. Residents founded and participated in a variety of programs, such as tutoring, gardening, and operating a closed-circuit television channel.

This mural was created with the support of the Villa Victoria tenants’ association, Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción, to decorate the Villa’s central gathering place. The mural features Ramón Betances, known as the ‘father’ of Puerto Rican nationalism for his revolt against Spanish rule. It also includes images of Puerto Rican history and culture and of the Villa Victoria community. One of its inscriptions reads, “Let us know how to fight for our honor and our liberty,” referring both to Betances and his struggle for independence and to the more recent political activism that inspired Villa Victoria’s founding.

I am a photography and digital enhancement enthusiast, as well as a poet/writer. Of late, I've been making jewelry, mostly bracelets and earrings. This is a rather expensive hobby, but I've made some people happy and enjoy wearing my own creations.

I would like to say that I earn a steady income from doing what I love, instead of admitting that I'm in the red, and perhaps I always will be. I'm grateful that our savings allow me to practice and hone my "crafts". Like millions of others, I labor in the shadows of the few who achieve fame or even moderate financial success while doing what they love.

I've worked in the field of digital type technologies and also as a freelance graphic designer.
I am married with one son in college.

I've trained in traditional art forms as well as graphic design. I earned a BFA in Graphic Design from MassArt during the Stone Age (1984), when everything had to be done by hand. Rocks were my paper and tools. :-) Well, I'm exaggerating a little. Computer graphic programs proved to be very limited back in the dinosaur age. We used early color apple computers to edit very low resolution digital portraits (shot with a very rough approximation of a web cam) in a computer course, which was more for novelty than for anything practical. My assignments for my design classes were done the old fashioned way--by hand on a large drawing table, aided by a xerox machine at the local "Copy Cop" and the occasional sheet of press-type if I could afford it and if it was allowed. Otherwise, type had to be rendered by hand, as well as whatever artwork or photography was needed in the magazine ads, brochures and whatever else was assigned--logos, layouts, corporate identity projects...

In college, I found the smell of photo chemicals in the school's darkroom to be intoxicating. I loved taking and developing black and white photos. I also learned how to "burn" and "dodge" areas, which needed more (or less) exposure time. I learned ways to "enhance" a less than ideal photo in the darkroom. I only learned a handful of the many "tricks of the trade" which art as well as professional "analog" photographers employed. My parent's wedding portrait, for example, was colored by hand. Other photographers used double exposure and sandwiched negatives. There is a rich history of "photo-manipulation"-- long before the advent of digital photography.

My earlier digital photographs were shot with a point and shoot digital camera. Some hover between drawings , paintings and photography. I call this (often) labor intensive pixel editing process "pixography". My latest photos, shot with a digital slr, may need a a single button 'tweek" to improve color and/or the contrast, or nothing at all.

In addition to photography and "pixography", I also write poetry and short prose. I have self-published in 4 anthologies with an international online group. Check out my poetry and more artwork at allpoetry.com/Freed_by_Mercy
